Another social observation follows: Many will seek the favor of a generous man, and every man is a friend to him who gives gifts (v. 6). Proverbs 19:6 recognizes how strongly generosity—or the appearance of access to gifts—can shape human relationships.
People seek the favor of the generous because gifts create attraction. To receive from someone often makes people attentive to that person. Solomon is not condemning generosity itself. Elsewhere Proverbs praises openhandedness, but the point here is to note how gift-giving affects social dynamics.
At the same time, every man is a friend to him who gives gifts hints that not all friendship is deep or pure. Some companionship grows from gain rather than love. Wisdom therefore learns to distinguish between genuine loyalty and the sort of friendship that clings only while benefits flow.
