A positive turn appears in Proverbs 19:8: He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who keeps understanding will find good (v. 8). Proverbs often frames wisdom as being in our true best interest, and this verse says so directly.
To get wisdom is to love one’s own soul. This is not selfishness in the sinful sense. It is the recognition that God’s instruction leads toward our actual flourishing. The one who seeks wisdom is not harming himself by restraint and obedience; he is caring for his deepest good.
Likewise, the one who keeps understanding will find good. Wisdom is not merely to be admired once and then forgotten. It is to be guarded, retained, and applied. As the book of Proverbs constantly emphasizes, wisdom must be received and then intentionally stewarded.
