The Bible Says
Proverbs 20:14 Meaning

Proverbs 20:14 captures a small comedy of human nature: "Bad, bad," says the buyer, but when he goes his way, then he boasts (v. 14). One of the chapter's most observational verses, exposing the dishonesty inside everyday negotiation.

The buyer says "bad, bad" to push the price down. He talks down the value of the goods to gain leverage. Once the deal is closed, he goes his way and boasts about what he just got, openly contradicting what he said moments before.

The watching student of Proverbs is being trained to notice his own version of the pattern. The way we discount what we want and inflate what we already have, depending on which way the conversation is moving, is a small dishonesty most people accept as normal. Solomon names it.
