A sobering image of the inner life appears in Proverbs 20:27: The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all the innermost parts of his being (v. 27). The verse turns inward and exposes how thoroughly God sees.
The spirit of man is the inner life of a person, and Solomon describes it as a lamp of the LORD. The lamp belongs to God. He carries it. He uses it to look inside the person who carries it.
So He searches all the innermost parts of his being. There are rooms in a person that no one else has access to, including, often, the person himself. There are no rooms in a man that are dark to God. Hebrews 4:13 makes the same point: nothing in creation is hidden from His sight.

The Blue Letter Bible ministry and the BLB Institute hold to the historical, conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy of Scripture. Since the text and audio content provided by BLB represent a range of evangelical traditions, all of the ideas and principles conveyed in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry.
