Proverbs 20:3 turns from royal threat to ordinary conflict: Keeping away from strife is an honor for a man, but any fool will quarrel (v. 3). Solomon reframes what counts as honorable conduct in the daily friction of life.
Keeping away from strife is called an honor, which is striking in a culture that often equates honor with vigorous self-defense. The wise man defends his life and his witness by withdrawing from foolish fights rather than escalating them. Disengagement, when chosen wisely, is a positive achievement.
But any fool will quarrel. The fool defends his pride at every available opportunity. Quarreling is the easy default that requires no self-control, while restraint requires real strength. Solomon honors the man who has trained himself to recognize which fights are worth entering and which are not.
