Pride gets named at two levels in Proverbs 21:4: Haughty eyes and a proud heart, The lamp of the wicked, is sin (v. 4). The verse names two outward and inward faces of pride—haughty eyes (what others see) and a proud heart (what God sees).
The phrase the lamp of the wicked is striking. Lamp imagery in Proverbs usually means life, prosperity, or guidance (Proverbs 13:9; 20:20; 20:27). Here Solomon says that what looks like the wicked man's lamp—what he believes is lighting his way and producing his success—is actually his sin.
He is navigating by a flame that will betray him. The light he trusts is the very thing leading him into the dark.
