Salomão contrasta as reações humanas em Provérbios 12:16, ensinando que A vexação do insensato logo se revela, mas o homem prudente encobre a afronta (v. 16). Este provérbio contrapõe a reação impulsiva à sabedoria contida. O insensato revela imediatamente a sua ira porque lhe falta autocontrole.
Quando a raiva de um tolo se manifesta de imediato, significa que a ofensa rapidamente se transforma em uma explosão visível. Ele não processa, reflete ou responde com sabedoria. Suas emoções o dominam e sua reação expõe sua falta de autocontrole.
O homem prudente, porém, encobre a afronta. Isso não significa que ele negue a transgressão ou que nunca aborde o pecado. Significa que ele não divulga cada insulto nem reage a cada afronta. Ele tem discernimento suficiente para absorver algumas ofensas sem torná-las públicas. Isso antecipa o chamado do Novo Testamento para sermos tardios em irar-se e abundantes em paciência.
