Abrindo o capítulo, Provérbios 13:1 introduz o princípio de que O filho sábio ouve a instrução de seu pai, mas o escarnecedor não escuta a reprovação (v. 1). Salomão, filho de Davi e rei de Israel, reinou em Jerusalém por volta de 970-930 a.C., após a morte de seu pai. Ele inicia este capítulo retomando um dos temas centrais de Provérbios: a sabedoria se revela na forma como uma pessoa reage à correção.
O filho sábio aceita a disciplina porque compreende que a correção serve para guiá-lo na vida. Ele não confunde repreensão com rejeição. Em vez disso, vê-a como um instrumento de amor e crescimento. A sabedoria começa quando uma pessoa é humilde o suficiente para ser ensinada.
O escarnecedor, porém, não escuta. Um zombador não é apenas desinformado; ele é endurecido pelo orgulho. Ele trata a correção com desprezo porque presume que já sabe tudo. Provérbios mostra repetidamente que essa postura coloca a pessoa fora do caminho da vida, porque a recusa em ouvir a repreensão fecha a porta para o crescimento.
