A verdade expressa em Provérbios 13:23 revela que Bastante alimento há na lavoura dos pobres, mas há quem se consome pela falta de justiça (v. 23). Este provérbio reconhece que a pobreza nem sempre é causada por preguiça ou falta de oportunidades. Às vezes, existe um potencial produtivo real que se perde por meio da opressão ou da corrupção.
As terras improdutivas dos pobres podem conter alimentos em abundância, o que significa que ali existem possibilidades, produtividade e valor real. Os pobres não são necessariamente pobres porque a terra ou o trabalho não são férteis. Pode haver capacidade genuína presente.
Mas tudo é destruído pela injustiça. Este é um lembrete crucial de que o mal social pode destruir aquilo que deveria ser provisão. Provérbios não ignora a responsabilidade pessoal, mas também não nega o erro estrutural. A justiça importa porque a injustiça pode privar os vulneráveis dos frutos que lhes são devidos.
