A sabedoria expressa em Provérbios 13:3 revela que Quem guarda a sua boca conserva a sua vida, mas aquele que abre grandemente os seus lábios será destruído (v. 3). A sabedoria muitas vezes se manifesta através da moderação. Uma boca controlada faz parte de uma vida controlada.
Guardar a boca significa vigiar as próprias palavras com cuidado, pensar antes de falar, ponderar o tom, o momento e a verdade. A fala pode criar conflitos, expor a insensatez, incitar a raiva ou prejudicar relacionamentos. Os sábios compreendem isso e, portanto, exercem prudência sobre a língua.
Aquele que abre demais os lábios, porém, fala sem disciplina. Deixa escapar tudo o que lhe vem à mente e, por isso, acaba em ruína. O argumento de Salomão não é que o silêncio seja sempre o melhor caminho, mas sim que a fala descontrolada é perigosa. Tiago 3 reforça essa mesma verdade, mostrando que a língua pode direcionar uma vida inteira.
