O paradoxo apresentado em Provérbios 13:7 revela que Uns se dizem ricos sem ter nada; outros se dizem pobres, sendo mui ricos (v. 7). Este provérbio expõe a falibilidade das aparências. Os seres humanos frequentemente projetam uma imagem que não corresponde à realidade.
Aquele que finge ser rico pode estar construindo uma identidade através da ostentação, do status ou da aprovação alheia. Mas Salomão afirma que não possui nada. A imagem de riqueza não cria substância. Provérbios adverte repetidamente contra confundir aparência com realidade.
A outra pessoa finge ser pobre, mas possui grande riqueza. A questão não é elogiar a dissimulação, mas observar que a impressão externa pode ser enganosa em ambos os sentidos. A sabedoria vai além da aparência. Ela valoriza o que é verdadeiro em vez do que é meramente projetado.
