A riqueza pode servir como uma proteção prática em certas situações. Ela pode funcionar como um resgate, no sentido de que oferece opções, poder de negociação ou alívio do perigo.
Ao mesmo tempo, o provérbio reconhece que a pobreza às vezes pode livrar uma pessoa de ser alvo da mesma forma. O pobre não ouve repreensão, provavelmente significando que ele escapa do tipo de ameaça ou extorsão que a riqueza pode atrair. Os provérbios frequentemente reconhecem que as riquezas trazem tanto vantagens quanto fardos.
A questão principal é que as realidades sociais são complexas, e o dinheiro não é nem segurança absoluta nem maldição absoluta. A riqueza pode proteger, mas também pode expor. A sabedoria, portanto, recusa-se a idolatrar as riquezas, mesmo reconhecendo seu poder prático em um mundo imperfeito.
