A verdade moral em Provérbios 14:21 revela que Quem despreza ao seu vizinho peca, mas aquele que se compadece dos pobres, esse é feliz (v. 21). Este versículo corrige a parcialidade social mencionada no anterior. Desprezar outra pessoa não é sinal de sofisticação, mas sim de pecado.
Aquele que despreza o seu próximo peca porque viola o chamado para amar o próximo como semelhante a Deus, criado à sua imagem. O desprezo é moralmente errado, pois nega a dignidade que Deus lhe concedeu.
Em contraste, feliz é aquele que é misericordioso com os pobres. A misericórdia para com os pobres está em consonância com o coração de Deus e traz bênçãos a quem a pratica. Essa felicidade é mais do que uma emoção; é o bem-estar constante que advém de viver em misericórdia.
