Em Provérbios 14:29, Salomão escreve: Quem é tardio em irar-se é grande em entendimento, mas o que tem espírito impaciente exalta a estultícia (v. 29). A sabedoria é paciente. A raiva não é automaticamente pecaminosa, mas a precipitação na ira muitas vezes o é.
A paciência demonstra grande compreensão, pois a moderação permite que a verdade, a proporção e a misericórdia moldem a resposta. A pessoa paciente não é desprovida de sentimentos. Ela é guiada pela sabedoria, e não pelo impulso.
Aquele que é irritável, porém, exalta a insensatez. Ele eleva a tolice, dando-lhe expressão visível. Cada explosão impulsiva se torna uma demonstração pública de desordem interior.
