Salomão escreve em Provérbios 14:31 que Quem oprime ao pobre ultraja ao seu Criador, mas honra-o aquele que se compadece do necessitado (v. 31). Este versículo relaciona o tratamento dado aos vulneráveis diretamente à atitude de cada um para com Deus.
Oprimir os pobres é afrontar o seu Criador, pois Deus criou tanto os pobres quanto os poderosos. Maltratar os vulneráveis é insultar o Criador, cuja imagem eles carregam. Esta é uma grave acusação moral.
Mas aquele que demonstra misericórdia aos necessitados honra a Deus. A misericórdia para com os vulneráveis é um ato de reverência a Deus. Isso está em consonância com o testemunho bíblico mais amplo de que o cuidado com os pobres não é periférico, mas central para uma vida de fé.
