Provérbios 15:1 começa com uma das declarações mais claras das Escrituras sobre o poder do tom de voz: Uma resposta branda desvia o furor, mas a palavra dura excita a ira (v. 1). Salomão, filho de Davi e rei de Israel, reinou em Jerusalém por volta de 970-930 a.C., após o reinado de Davi, por volta de 1010-970 a.C. Como governante, ele sabia que as palavras podem tanto acalmar quanto inflamar conflitos, e inicia este capítulo mostrando que a fala nunca é neutra.
Uma resposta gentil não significa discurso fraco ou bajulação desonesta. Significa palavras guiadas pela sabedoria, moderação e amor. A gentileza tem a força de absorver a hostilidade sem retribuí-la na mesma medida. Por se recusar a intensificar o conflito, muitas vezes afasta a ira, interrompendo o ciclo de hostilidade.
Em contrapartida, uma palavra dura inflama a raiva. A aspereza alimenta o fogo. Pode parecer poderosa no momento, mas geralmente multiplica o conflito em vez de resolvê-lo. Este provérbio nos lembra que a sabedoria muitas vezes não reside em vencer uma discussão, mas em escolher o tipo de discurso que torna a paz possível.
