Provérbios 15:13 aborda a vida interior e sua expressão exterior: O coração alegre torna contente o rosto, mas com a tristeza do coração abate-se o espírito (v. 13). Salomão observa que o que está dentro muitas vezes se manifesta por fora.
Um coração alegre ilumina o rosto, pois a alegria interior se manifesta naturalmente na expressão. A alegria não é mera emoção superficial; é um estado interior que pode animar todo o ser. Essa é uma das razões pelas quais os provérbios bíblicos dedicam tanta atenção ao coração.
Mas com a tristeza do coração abate-se o espírito. A profunda tristeza faz mais do que mudar o humor; ela pode destruir a força interior. Salomão é realista sobre como a dor afeta a pessoa por completo. Este versículo nos convida à compaixão porque reconhece que a tristeza pode ser espiritualmente exaustiva.
