Provérbios 15:18 compara dois tipos de pessoas em conflito: o homem irascível excita rixas; mas quem é tardio em irar-se aplaca contendas (v. 18). A diferença não está apenas na personalidade, mas também na sabedoria.
O homem de temperamento explosivo fomenta discórdia porque leva emoções intensas para situações relacionais. Suas reações amplificam o conflito. Ele causa instabilidade porque é governado pelo impulso em vez do discernimento.
Mas aquele que é tardio em irar-se aplaca contendas. A paciência interrompe a escalada emocional. Esse tipo de pessoa tem firmeza interior suficiente para absorver a tensão sem multiplicá-la. Vemos mais desse princípio refletido posteriormente no Novo Testamento, que adverte que a ira humana não produz a justiça de Deus (para saber mais sobre como receber a palavra de Deus e resistir à ira leva a uma vida moldada pela Sua justiça, leia nosso comentário sobre Tiago 1:19-21).
