Um filho sábio alegra o pai porque a sabedoria é frutífera nos relacionamentos. Os pais se regozijam ao verem a retidão, a humildade e a maturidade criando raízes na próxima geração. Essa alegria é mais profunda do que o orgulho pelo sucesso; é a alegria pelo caráter.
Em contraste, o homem insensato despreza a sua mãe. A insensatez não é apenas imaturidade; ela se torna desprezo. Rejeita o amor e a instrução que deveriam ser honrados. O versículo nos lembra que a sabedoria se expressa na valorização dos relacionamentos íntimos, enquanto a insensatez os corrói.
