Provérbios 16:16 retoma um de seus valores centrais: Quanto melhor é adquirir sabedoria do que o ouro! Adquirir o entendimento é mais para se escolher do que a prata (v. 16). Isso não significa rejeitar os bens materiais em si, mas sim estabelecer uma hierarquia de valores.
Ouro e prata são desejáveis, poderosos e úteis. Contudo, a sabedoria é superior, pois ensina a pessoa a viver corretamente com os recursos que possui. Sem sabedoria, a riqueza pode se tornar um instrumento de autodestruição. Com sabedoria, mesmo os recursos mais modestos podem se tornar frutíferos.
Portanto, o entendimento não é um luxo opcional. É o bem mais fundamental. Salomão insiste nesse ponto porque os seres humanos são naturalmente atraídos por bens materiais visíveis, negligenciando a formação interior que determina se esses bens serão uma bênção ou uma destruição.
