Poucos provérbios são tão famosos quanto Provérbios 16:18: A soberba precede a destruição, e o espírito altivo, a queda (v. 18). O orgulho cria uma ilusão de invulnerabilidade pouco antes da realidade se impor.
Um espírito arrogante é uma autoconfiança inflada e desapegada de Deus. Presume-se estabilidade e superioridade. Mas, como o orgulho se recusa a ser corrigido e distorce a percepção, coloca a pessoa à beira do colapso sem lhe permitir enxergar o perigo.
É por isso que o orgulho muitas vezes precede a ruína. A destruição não é aleatória; ela nasce da cegueira que o próprio orgulho cria. Como as Escrituras ensinam consistentemente, confiar em nós mesmos em vez de em Deus leva à perversidade, à confusão e, por fim, à frustração.
