O orgulho é diretamente julgado em Provérbios 16:5: Todo aquele que é soberbo de coração é abominação a Jeová; certamente, não ficará impune (v. 5). O orgulho não é apenas uma característica desagradável. É algo profundamente ofensivo a Deus porque coloca o ego no lugar de confiança, domínio e avaliação que pertence a Ele.
A expressão soberbo de coração aponta para uma postura interior que vai além do comportamento. O orgulho é a confiança em si mesmo, independente de Deus, a crença de que "eu sei mais" ou "estou seguro pelo meu próprio poder". O ensinamento mais amplo de Provérbios repetidamente apresenta o orgulho como o oposto da fé, e é exatamente isso que este versículo revela.
Como a soberba é uma recusa da realidade, Salomão afirma que não ficará impune. A realidade, eventualmente, destrói as ilusões criadas pelo orgulho. O orgulhoso pode se manter no topo por um tempo, mas a ordem moral de Deus é construída contra a autoexaltação. A humildade não é ornamental em Provérbios; ela é essencial para a vida.
