Provérbios 17:10 apresenta como um contraste simples aguça o valor da capacidade de aprender: Uma repreensão entra mais profundamente no inteligente do que cem açoites no insensato (v. 10). A diferença não reside na severidade da correção, mas na postura de quem a recebe.
Uma pessoa que possui entendimento é tão receptiva ao aprendizado que uma única repreensão a penetra profundamente. Ela ouve, recebe e é transformada por ela. Isso é sabedoria: não resistir à correção, mas permitir que a verdade faça seu trabalho.
Um tolo, porém, pode suportar cem açoites e ainda assim não aprender de verdade. A dor por si só não produz sabedoria. Sem humildade, mesmo consequências repetidas podem não atingir o coração. Este versículo deixa claro que o crescimento depende menos da força da disciplina e mais da receptividade da alma.
