Uma pergunta instigante surge em Provérbios 17:16: De que serve na mão do tolo o preço para comprar a sabedoria, visto que ele não tem entendimento? (v. 16). Dinheiro ou oportunidade, por si só, não podem tornar uma pessoa sábia.
O tolo pode ter o preço, ou seja, acesso, recursos ou a oportunidade externa de receber sabedoria. Mas ele não tem bom senso, não tem discernimento, não tem uma postura receptiva ao aprendizado. Por causa disso, a oportunidade permanece desperdiçada. A sabedoria não é adquirida como uma mercadoria por aqueles que não estão dispostos a recebê-la.
Este provérbio adverte que as vantagens externas não garantem a transformação interior. Uma pessoa pode possuir livros, mestres, recursos e tempo, mas permanecer tola se recusar a humildade. A sabedoria é uma dádiva a ser recebida com fé e administrada com obediência, não uma posse comprada por meros bens materiais.
