Um dos provérbios mais amados sobre amizade aparece aqui: O amigo ama em todo o tempo, e para a angústia nasce o irmão (v. 17). Provérbios 17:17 fala de amor constante em vez de amor por conveniência.
Um verdadeiro amigo ama em todos os momentos. Esse amor não é sazonal nem condicional. Permanece nos dias comuns e nos difíceis. Essa é uma bela imagem da fidelidade incondicional nas relações humanas: o tipo de amor que não desaparece quando surgem dificuldades.
O segundo verso aprofunda essa verdade, e para a angústia nasce o irmão significa que existe um tipo de lealdade familiar destinada a momentos difíceis. Sejam laços familiares diretos ou laços que se tornam como família, a questão é que os laços estreitos devem demonstrar sua força no sofrimento, não apenas no conforto.
