Provérbios 17:18 adverte sobre obrigações financeiras imprudentes: O homem falto de entendimento compromete-se e torna-se fiador na presença do seu vizinho (v. 18). Salomão já havia falado antes sobre o perigo da fiança precipitada, e retoma o assunto aqui.
Se comprometer e tornar-se fiador é aceitar voluntariamente com a dívida ou obrigação de outra pessoa sem discernimento. O problema não é a generosidade, mas o compromisso insensato. Uma pessoa pode sentir-se nobre no momento, mas assumir fardos que não está vocacionada ou apta a suportar.
Por isso Salomão chama isso de falta de entendimento. A sabedoria reconhece a importância da administração responsável, dos limites e do julgamento ponderado. Nem todo impulso de socorrer é realmente sábio. A obrigação insensata pode prejudicar tanto quem dá quanto a família que lhe foi confiada.
