Em Provérbios 17:19, a conexão entre o amor pelo conflito e a fala orgulhosa é estabelecida: Quem ama a contenda ama a transgressão; aquele que faz alta a sua porta busca a destruição (v. 19). Pecado e conflito frequentemente andam juntos.
Amar a contenda é acolher a desordem, portanto não é surpreendente que tal pessoa também ame a transgressão. A rebeldia contra a ordem de Deus facilmente se transforma em atrito com os outros. Um coração inclinado ao pecado muitas vezes se torna um coração atraído pelo conflito.
A expressão aquele que faz alta a sua porta provavelmente se refere a uma demonstração de auto exaltação, orgulho grandioso ou arrogância defensiva. A imagem sugere algo que esta acima, com o foco de impressionar ou proteger o próprio ego. Salomão afirma que tal pessoa busca a destruição, pois o orgulho cria as próprias condições que levam à ruína.
