O capítulo termina com uma observação memorável: Até o insensato, estando calado, é tido por sábio; quando cerrar os seus lábios, é considerado prudente (v. 28). Provérbios 17:28 destaca como o silêncio pode ocultar a tolice, embora não possa transformá-la.
O provérbio é em parte humorístico, mas transmite uma mensagem importante. Como muita tolice se revela através da fala descontrolada, o silêncio ao menos impede parte dessa exposição. Um tolo pode ser considerado sábio simplesmente porque ainda não se traiu com palavras.
Ao mesmo tempo, o versículo também honra a moderação. Mesmo deixando de lado a ironia, há sabedoria em saber quando não falar. Aquele que fecha os lábios demonstra prudência, pois o silêncio pode ser uma forma de humildade, escuta e autocontrole. Nesse sentido, o provérbio encerra o capítulo exaltando mais uma vez a fala disciplinada.
