Provérbios 17:4 adverte sobre o apetite moral: O malfeitor atende aos lábios perversos, e o mentiroso dá ouvidos à língua maligna (v. 4). As pessoas são atraídas pelo tipo de discurso que corresponde à direção do seu coração.
O malfeitor dá ouvidos a lábios perversos porque o mal busca confirmação e reforço. O que estamos dispostos a ouvir muitas vezes revela o que secretamente desejamos. O coração inclinado ao pecado frequentemente acolhe vozes que o desculpam, o inflamam ou o normalizam.
Da mesma forma, um mentiroso dá ouvidos a uma língua destrutiva. A falsidade atrai falsidade. A fala destrutiva torna-se atraente quando a pessoa já está afastada da verdade. Este provérbio mostra que ouvir é, em si, um ato moral. As palavras que acolhemos ajudam a moldar o caminho que trilhamos.
