Provérbios 17:5 relaciona diretamente a forma como tratamos as pessoas à nossa atitude para com Deus: Quem zomba do pobre ultraja ao seu Criador; e o que se alegra com a calamidade não ficará impune (v. 5). Os pobres não estão fora da preocupação de Deus. Desprezá-los é insultar Aquele que os criou.
Zombar dos pobres é transformar a vulnerabilidade em objeto de desprezo. Salomão afirma que isso afronta seu Criador, pois todo ser humano possui a dignidade de ter sido criado por Deus. A crueldade para com os fracos, portanto, não é meramente um pecado social; é uma rebelião teológica.
O segundo verso amplia a advertência. Aquele que se alegra com a calamidade revela um coração corrompido pela malícia. Em vez de misericórdia, ele se deleita com a desgraça alheia. Salomão insiste que tal pessoa não ficará impune. Deus se opõe ao espírito que se alimenta da miséria dos outros.
