Provérbios 17:7 destaca o que é apropriado e o que não é: Não convém ao tolo o lábio excelente, muito menos, ao príncipe, o lábio mentiroso (v. 7). Algumas coisas são inadequadas porque contradizem o caráter de quem fala.
A excelente oratória soa estranha na boca de um tolo, porque a tolice carece da essência necessária para sustentar a nobreza. Um tolo pode imitar palavras elevadas por um instante, mas a inadequação acaba se tornando óbvia. A sabedoria deve residir no coração, não apenas nos lábios.
Se essa discrepância for grave, se torna muito menos apropriado que um príncipe minta. Aqueles que detêm autoridade devem ser marcados pela honestidade, pois sua fala afeta a justiça e a ordem. A mentira, quando dita por líderes, é especialmente destrutiva, já que distorce a confiança da qual depende um bom governo.
