O contraste surge imediatamente em Provérbios 18:11: Os bens do rico são a sua cidade forte e como um muro alto na sua imaginação (v. 11). A riqueza pode dar a sensação de segurança, mas Salomão introduz uma importante ressalva.
Um homem rico pode tratar sua riqueza como sua cidade forte, um lugar de proteção, influência e aparente controle. Na vida comum, o dinheiro pode de fato fornecer reservas e opções. Os provérbios frequentemente reconhecem essa realidade prática.
Mas Salomão acrescenta, como um alto muro em sua própria imaginação. O perigo não está apenas em possuir riquezas, mas em imaginar que elas possam fazer o que somente Deus pode fazer. As riquezas podem proteger contra algumas vulnerabilidades terrenas, mas não podem, em última análise, proteger a alma, vencer a morte ou substituir a confiança no Senhor. A riqueza torna-se perigosa quando é confundida com o refúgio definitivo.
