Um princípio jurídico aparece em Provérbios 18:17: O primeiro que pleiteia a sua causa parece justo, mas vem a outra parte e o sonda (v. 17). As primeiras impressões podem ser persuasivas, mas nem sempre são confiáveis.
Quem apresenta seu caso primeiro costuma parecer certo, porque uma história contada sem contestação pode soar completa e convincente. O ouvinte tem apenas um ponto de vista e pode presumir, muito rapidamente, que compreende toda a situação.
Mas então surge outro e o examina. O contra-interrogatório, novos depoimentos e um conhecimento mais aprofundado podem expor o que estava incompleto, tendencioso ou enganoso. Este provérbio incentiva a paciência no julgamento. A sabedoria não resolve uma questão simplesmente porque a primeira versão foi persuasiva.
