Provérbios 18:18 diz: A sorte faz cessar os pleitos e decide entre os poderosos (v. 18). No mundo antigo, o lançamento de sortes podia funcionar como um meio reconhecido de resolver questões controversas quando o julgamento humano atingia seus limites.
O provérbio observa que o lançamento de sorte põe fim à discórdia ao fornecer um ponto de decisão aceito. Em vez de uma escalada interminável, havia um mecanismo para resolver a questão quando ambos os lados se submetiam ao resultado.
Também serve para decidir entre os poderosos, o que significa que mesmo os contendores mais influentes podem precisar de um meio consensual de resolução. O versículo destaca a importância da resolução. A sabedoria valoriza processos que impedem que o conflito consuma tudo em seu caminho.
