O provérbio seguinte expõe a essência da fala insensata: O tolo não tem prazer no entendimento, mas tão somente em se revelar tal como é (v. 2). A insensatez não é meramente uma falta de informação; Provérbios 18:2 destaca que se trata de uma preferência pela autoexpressão em detrimento da verdade.
O tolo não se deleita em compreender, pois isso exige humildade, paciência e abertura para ser corrigido. O tolo tem pouco interesse por qualquer uma dessas qualidades. Ele não está ansioso para aprender a verdade se isso puder desafiar o que ele já quer dizer.
Em vez disso, ele se deleita apenas em revelar seus próprios pensamentos. Ele quer se exibir, não descobrir a sabedoria. Este provérbio é especialmente incisivo porque mostra com que frequência a fala pode ser motivada pelo ego em vez da intuição. O tolo fala não porque a verdade precise ser dita, mas porque ele quer ser ouvido.
