A preguiça é comparada à destruição em Provérbios 18:9: Aquele que é remisso na sua obra é irmão do que é destruidor (v. 9). Esta é uma forte afirmação sobre a negligência.
Ser negligente no trabalho não significa simplesmente estar cansado ou limitado. Significa negligenciar a responsabilidade, recusar a administração fiel exigida por aquilo que foi confiado. Salomão diz que tal pessoa é irmão do destruidor, porque a negligência pode ser tão prejudicial quanto a destruição ativa.
Este versículo amplia a visão moral de Provérbios, a destruição não é causada apenas pelo mal deliberado; ela também pode ser causada por negligência. A falha em construir, manter, cuidar ou concluir o que é nosso dever pode se tornar uma forma de dano. A sabedoria, portanto, exige não apenas boas intenções, mas também fidelidade diligente.
