Provérbios 19:1 começa comparando a integridade com a fala perversa: Melhor é o pobre que anda na sua integridade do que aquele que é perverso de lábios e tolo (v. 1). Salomão, filho de Davi e rei de Israel, mostra mais uma vez que a qualidade moral importa mais do que o status exterior. A pobreza não é o ideal, mas ainda é preferível à corrupção.
O homem pobre que age com integridade pode não ter muitos recursos, mas possui algo ainda melhor: um caráter íntegro. Integridade significa que sua vida é reta, honesta e sem divisões. Ele não apresenta uma versão de si mesmo em público enquanto esconde outra por baixo da superfície.
Em contrapartida, aquele que fala de maneira perversa é chamado de tolo, pois palavras tortuosas revelam um coração torto. A fala distorcida distorce a realidade, prejudica o próximo e desestabiliza quem a profere. A ideia de Salomão é que a falta de riqueza não é a pobreza mais profunda; a falta de integridade, sim.
