Um provérbio elegante sobre autocontrole aparece em Provérbios 19:11: A discrição do homem fá-lo tardio em irar-se, e é a sua glória esquecer ofensas (v. 11). A sabedoria se manifesta não apenas naquilo que nos provoca, mas também naquilo que escolhemos não deixar nos dominar.
A discrição torna a pessoa menos propensa à raiva, pois a compreensão gera equilíbrio. Os sábios não reagem a cada ofensa como se fosse a última. Eles avaliam, ponderam e se controlam. Isso é força, não fraqueza.
Até pode se dizer que é sua glória ignorar uma transgressão. Ignorar, aqui, não significa chamar o mal de bem. Significa se recusar a transformar cada afronta em conflito. Há uma nobre beleza na contenção misericordiosa, em escolher a paz em vez de uma escalada desnecessária.
