Uma descrição vívida da preguiça aparece em Provérbios 19:15: A preguiça faz cair em profundo sono, e a alma remissa padecerá fome (v. 15). O preguiçoso é retratado como alguém entorpecido e dominado pela própria negligência.
A preguiça mergulha num sono profundo porque a indolência faz mais do que adiar tarefas; ela entorpece a vontade. Cria passividade, apatia e fuga da responsabilidade. A questão não é a necessidade de descanso, mas a recusa em assumir a responsabilidade.
O resultado é que o homem ocioso sofrerá fome. A fome aqui é tanto prática quanto moral. A negligência leva à carência. O desejo sem trabalho produz vazio. Provérbios insiste repetidamente que o trabalho fiel faz parte de uma vida sábia no mundo de Deus.
