Provérbios 19:16 une obediência e autocuidado: Quem guarda os mandamentos guarda a sua alma, mas aquele que não faz caso dos seus caminhos morrerá (v. 16). Os mandamentos de Deus não são fardos arbitrários; são proteções para a vida.
Guardar o mandamento é guardar a própria alma, a obediência protege o ser interior porque alinha a vida com a realidade e com o Deus que a criou. Esta é mais uma maneira pela qual Provérbios ensina que a sabedoria serve ao nosso verdadeiro bem.
Mas quem é negligente na conduta morrerá. A negligência na maneira de agir é fatal, pois os caminhos têm destinos. A conduta importa. Uma vida moral negligenciada não é um terreno neutro; é um caminho rumo à destruição.
