A disciplina parental é abordada claramente em Provérbios 19:18: Castiga a teu filho, porque ainda há esperança, e não consintas na sua destruição (v. 18). Provérbios vê a correção como uma expressão de amor, não de hostilidade.
Disciplinar seu filho enquanto ainda há esperança significa aproveitar uma janela de oportunidade crucial para que a correção molde o caráter e redirecione más ações. O amor não se limita a esperar e assistir um filho se autodestruir. Ele age enquanto há tempo para mudar o rumo da sua vida.
A frase final é impactante: não deseje a sua morte. Recusar a disciplina pode parecer gentil no momento, mas se isso abandona uma criança à própria sorte, é na verdade cruel. Salomão está ensinando que o verdadeiro amor está disposto a corrigir porque busca a vida, não apenas o conforto momentâneo.
