O próximo provérbio valoriza a lealdade acima da mera riqueza: O que faz um homem desejável é a sua benignidade. Mais vale o pobre do que o mentiroso (v. 22). Provérbios 19:22 identifica o que torna uma pessoa verdadeiramente atraente em caráter.
O que é desejável é a sua bondade, a sua lealdade à aliança, a sua misericórdia e o seu amor fiel. É disto que os outros mais precisam e o que Deus mais valoriza. O caráter, e não a aparência, é a essência de uma vida bela.
Portanto, é melhor ser pobre do que mentiroso. Novamente, a carência exterior é preferível à corrupção interior. Um mentiroso pode parecer mais capaz ou bem-sucedido, mas prejudica o tecido moral da vida. A pobreza sem engano ainda é melhor do que o ganho obtido por meio da falsidade.
