Uma imagem memorável da preguiça aparece em Provérbios 19:24: O preguiçoso mete a mão no prato e nem ao menos quer levá-la à boca (v. 24). Salomão usa o exagero para expor a preguiça absurda.
O preguiçoso é tão inativo que não consegue completar nem mesmo o movimento necessário para se alimentar. A imagem é intencionalmente quase ridícula. Ela mostra como a tolice pode reduzir uma pessoa à inutilidade, mesmo quando a provisão está ao alcance.
Este versículo ensina que a preguiça não é apenas falta de energia; é a falta de empenho. A oportunidade está presente, mas a diligência está ausente. O preguiçoso chega apenas até a metade do caminho, e essa falta de empenho o impede de colher os frutos que poderiam ser seus.
