Provérbios 20:1 abre o capítulo com uma advertência vívida sobre a embriaguez: O vinho é escarnecedor, e a bebida forte, turbulenta; e todo aquele que é vencido por eles não é sábio (v. 1). Salomão, filho de Davi e rei de Israel, reinou em Jerusalém por volta de 970-930 a.C. Ele escreve não como um moralista repreendendo o consumo, mas como um observador que descreve o que essas substâncias realmente fazem a uma pessoa.
O vinho e a bebida forte são personificados no verso. Eles zombam e brigam. A imagem reconhece que o que a substância faz com o bebedor é a verdadeira natureza da substância. Ela lentamente toma conta da vontade de quem a consome, até que a pessoa seja moldada pela bebida, e não o contrário.
O homem embriagado por ela não é sábio, pois a sabedoria requer clareza de espírito e autocontrole. Tudo o que corrói essas qualidades é, segundo os padrões de Provérbios, insensato. A mesma advertência reaparece em Provérbios 23: 29-35 e em Provérbios 31:4-5, onde a mãe do rei Lemuel diz ao filho que bebida forte não é para reis.
