Uma imagem vívida da boca surge em Provérbios 20:17: Suave é ao homem o pão de mentira, mas, depois, a sua boca se encherá de cascalho (v. 17). Salomão admite o prazer real do ganho desonesto e então nomeia o que vem a seguir.
O pão obtido por meio de falsidade é doce no momento da degustação. Salomão não finge que o ganho desonesto não tem atrativo. Há uma doçura real na língua quando o ganho é fresco.
Mas depois sua boca encherá de cascalho. A sensação de areia rangendo nos dentes é uma pequena, persistente e inescapável miséria. A imagem captura as longas consequências do ganho desonesto. O ganho corrói, lentamente, em lugares que não cicatrizam. O sábio conta a areia antes de contar a doçura.
