Salomão menciona uma ofensa grave em Provérbios 20:20: Quem amaldiçoa a seu pai ou a sua mãe, apagar-se-lhe-á a lâmpada nas mais densas trevas (v. 20). Amaldiçoar os pais era considerado em Israel uma transgressão da aliança da mais alta gravidade (Êxodo 21:17 e Levítico 20:9).
Amaldiçoar o pai ou a mãe é se voltar contra a própria terra onde a vida está enraizada. A família é a primeira arena que Provérbios ensina o aluno a honrar (Provérbios 1:8). Salomão não repete aqui a penalidade legal; ele descreve a consequência interior.
Sua lâmpada se apagará na escuridão. A imagem é de estar privado de luz, esperança e direção justamente no momento em que mais se precisa delas. A hora escura chegará para todos. Aquele que amaldiçoou seus pais a enfrentará sem uma lâmpada.
