Salomão adverte sobre o uso precipitado de palavras sagradas em Provérbios 20:25: Laço é para o homem o dizer temerariamente: É santo, e não refletir senão depois de fazer o voto (v. 25). Os votos em Israel frequentemente envolviam declarar algo dedicado ao SENHOR.
Dizer precipitadamente É santo é declarar algo consagrado a Deus antes de calcular as consequências. Salomão chama essa declaração apressada de armadilha. A armadilha se fecha assim que as palavras são proferidas, porque as palavras ditas diante de Deus não são negociáveis simplesmente porque quem as profere mudou de ideia.
Fazer perguntas somente depois de ter feito o voto é ser enredado pela própria boca. Jesus aborda exatamente essa preocupação: sim, sim; não, não; (Mateus 5:37). O sábio mede as palavras antes que as sagradas saiam de sua boca.
