A característica de um trono sustentado é mencionada em Provérbios 20:28: A benignidade e a verdade preservam o rei, e o seu trono firma-se com a benignidade (v. 28). A estabilidade de um rei não se fundamenta primordialmente em muralhas, exércitos ou alianças.
Benignidade e verdade preservam o rei, benignidade aqui é fidelidade à aliança, a palavra hebraica hesed, que carrega o peso do amor comprometido e fiel à aliança. Um rei sustentado por hesed entre ele e seu povo possui algo mais profundo do que poder.
Ele sustenta seu trono pela justiça, o mesmo princípio se aplica à liderança em qualquer nível. A durabilidade da autoridade é moral antes de ser estrutural. Um líder que não ama seu povo e não lhe diz a verdade se sustenta apenas pela inércia. Quando a inércia acabar, ele também acabará.
