Uma nova imagem surge em Provérbios 20:4: O preguiçoso não lavra por causa do inverno; por isso, na ceifa procura e nada tem (v. 4). Salomão leva o estudante ao ritmo agrícola do antigo Israel para fazer uma dura observação sobre a preguiça.
O outono era a estação das chuvas, quando a terra amolecia o suficiente para ser trabalhada. O preguiçoso evita esse trabalho árduo e desconfortável fora de época e chega à colheita de mãos vazias. A natureza não ajusta seus ritmos para acomodar um trabalhador relutante.
Assim, ele mendigou durante a colheita e não teve nada, o homem que se recusou a trabalhar na época do trabalho não será salvo pela época da colheita. O princípio se generaliza muito além da agricultura: a falta de preparo inevitavelmente leva à necessidade mais tarde.
