Salomão contrasta discurso e substância em Provérbios 20:6: Muitos proclamam a sua benignidade, mas o homem fidedigno, quem o poderá achar? (v. 6). O versículo expõe a discrepância entre o que as pessoas dizem sobre si mesmas e o que realmente fazem.
Muitos proclamam sua lealdade porque a consideram admirável, e as pessoas querem ser admiradas. Proclamar a lealdade é fácil. A lealdade se torna mais difícil quando tem um preço, quando apoiar alguém expõe a pessoa leal a perdas, e a maioria daqueles que a proclamaram se retira discretamente nesse ponto.
Então Salomão pergunta: quem encontrará um homem fiel? O homem fiel é raro, aquele em quem palavra e vida se tornaram uma só coisa. O versículo ensina o estudante a ponderar a fidelidade demonstrada em detrimento de promessas vazias e a testar suas próprias palavras com o mesmo padrão.
